Choosing and Using Homeschool Software

There are many homeschool software packages available for every subject of learning out there. There are software packages for teaching math, english, fine arts, foreign languages, and all kinds of various other subjects. There are also many homeschool software packages available for tracking the numbers for your homeschool, for example your child's grades, or completion rates. Evaluating and choosing these software packages can be daunting, even for the best homeschool parents. Some of the things you can consider when looking at homeschool software for teaching a subject are listed below.

Questions to ask about homeschool software

1. Will my child be able to understand it?

2. Is it affordable?

3. What do others who have used the software have to say about it?

4. Can I try it before I buy it?

The best homeschool software is easy to use

When looking at a software package for teaching a subject in your homeschool, you will want to ask yourself, "Do I think my child will understand this software?". For example, consider a software package called "Rosetta Stone". This software package is used for teaching foreign languages, but could be considered difficult to use and understand. If you child will not understand how to use the software, they are likely to not get anything out of the software, or want to use it on a regular basis, which will defeat the purpose of the software anyway.

Is it affordable?

Another consideration for choosing a homeschool software package is, is it affordable. The question is not necessarily whether it is expensive, because many software packages tailored to the homeschool market are certainly expensive. But does it provide good value for the money? Will it save me time and money spent elsewhere teaching this subject to my child? If so, it should be considered affordable. If the software doesn't provide this kind of return, you should consider another software package.

Read reviews

Many times, the most important thing you can do before purchasing homeschool software is to read what others are saying about that software. Do a search on Google, or browse a homeschool magazine. These reviews and opinions will highlight things you may not have considered when you were evaluating the software. A reviewer might point out a critical flaw in the software package, or a missing feature that you realize you can't live without. Reading reviews or comments will bring this out before you purchase the software package.

Try it first

Finally, try as many homeschool programs as you can get your hands on. If the software vendor has a trial version, download or request it, and give the software a hands on evaluation. You may realize that the screen shots on the website did not do it justice, or that the interface is much clunkier that you realized. Trying the software yourself can be invaluable in making a good purchasing decision when buying homeschool software, and can save you a lot of money.

Using these methods, your intuition, and other techniques can help you narrow down your search for the best homeschool software that is available, saving you time and frustration in the long run, not to mention saving your dollars, which is important in every homeschool.
